Medicare Plans

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans in Wichita Falls, TX

Original Medicare covers most of your hospital and doctor bills, but not every dollar. A Medicare Supplement plan, often called Medigap, fills in the deductibles, coinsurance and copays Medicare leaves on the table, so your yearly cost stays close to fixed.

Medigap plans are standardized by letter, meaning a Plan G from one company pays the same benefits as a Plan G from another. What actually differs is price, service and how each carrier handles rate increases over time.

  • Keep any doctor who takes Medicare
  • Predictable monthly premium, few surprises
  • No referrals and no provider network
  • Travel coverage anywhere in the U.S.

How it works

Medicare pays first, your Medigap plan pays the rest

You keep Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) as your primary coverage. When you visit United Regional Health Care System, Kell West Regional Hospital, or any clinic across Wichita County that takes Medicare, the claim goes to Medicare first. Whatever share Medicare doesn't cover gets forwarded automatically to your Medigap company, and most members never see a bill beyond the annual Part B deductible.

Because there's no network, you never have to ask whether a specialist is "in plan." If they take Medicare, you're covered, whether you're at Clinics of North Texas here in Wichita Falls, visiting family in Dallas, or on a trip to see grandkids out of state. Medigap doesn't include drug coverage, so most members pair it with a standalone Part D drug plan.

Rates rise every year; the plan doesn't change

Medigap benefits are locked by law, so a rate increase is the only thing to watch. We re-shop your Plan G or Plan N each year to make sure you aren't paying a loyalty penalty for staying put.

Medigap does not include prescriptions

You'll want a separate Part D plan. Skipping it when you're first eligible can trigger a lifelong late penalty.

Timing

Your open enrollment window matters more than anything else

For six months starting the month your Part B begins, you can buy any Medigap plan sold in Texas with no health questions asked. That's the one window where a diagnosis can't raise your price or get you turned down.

Once that window closes, Texas carriers may use medical underwriting. Most people still qualify, but conditions like a recent heart procedure, oxygen use or insulin-dependent diabetes can limit your choices. If you're turning 65, start the conversation about three months ahead of time.

  • Six-month guaranteed-issue window starts with Part B
  • No network, no referrals, no annual plan shopping
  • Guaranteed renewable as long as you pay the premium
  • Special guaranteed-issue rights apply if a plan leaves your area

Is it right for you?

Who tends to choose Medigap in North Texas

  • You see several specialists

Cardiology, oncology or orthopedic visits add up fast under copay-based plans. Medigap keeps those costs flat.
  • You want budget certainty

A higher known premium beats an unknown out-of-pocket maximum for many retirees on a fixed income, including former Sheppard Air Force Base personnel.
  • You travel or snowbird

Coverage follows you anywhere in the U.S. that accepts Medicare, with no out-of-area network to worry about.

If a lower monthly cost and built-in dental or fitness benefits matter more to you, compare this against Medicare Advantage in Wichita Falls before you decide.

Underwriting

Applying outside a protected period

Inside your six-month Medigap open enrollment window, or when a guaranteed-issue right applies, health questions are off the table. Outside those periods, Texas carriers may underwrite: they ask about diagnoses, procedures, medications and pending tests, and they can decline the application or charge a higher rate.

Guaranteed-issue rights kick in for specific situations: your Advantage plan leaves the service area, an employer group plan ends, a carrier misled you, or you're inside the 12-month trial right after first joining an Advantage plan at 65. Those windows are short and easy to miss, which is why we ask about your health history before we start an application rather than after it's already been declined.

If underwriting looks like it could be a problem, we say so up front and look at Medicare Advantage instead of letting you collect a decline on your record.

Rates

Rate increases, travel, and the yearly re-shop

How Medigap rates change

Benefits are fixed by law, so price is the only thing that moves. Texas carriers typically price by attained age, meaning your premium climbs as you get older and again whenever the carrier files a general rate increase. Two companies selling the same Plan G can drift far apart in price over five years.

We re-check your premium each year against the other carriers we represent. Switching usually requires passing underwriting, so it's a decision to make while you're healthy, not after a diagnosis.

Travel and access

With Original Medicare behind it, Medigap works with any provider in the country who accepts Medicare. There's no out-of-area rule, no referral and no network to check before you see a specialist in Dallas, Houston or across state lines.

Some Medigap plans include limited foreign travel emergency coverage. It's capped and carries a deductible, useful, but not a substitute for travel medical insurance on a long trip abroad.

Common questions

What Wichita Falls clients ask before applying

When should I apply?
Ideally about three months before your Part B start date, so your six-month guaranteed-issue window is put to full use. See the turning 65 timeline for the exact dates.
Do I still need a Part D plan?
Yes. Medigap never includes prescriptions. Pair it with a standalone Part D plan or you risk a lifelong late-enrollment penalty.
Can my Medigap plan be cancelled?
Not for health reasons. Medigap policies are guaranteed renewable as long as you pay the premium.
Is Plan F still available?
Only to people who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Everyone else compares Plan G, Plan N and high-deductible Plan G.
Does the company I choose change my benefits?
No. A Plan G is a Plan G. What differs is the premium, the rate-increase history and how easy the company is to deal with on a claim.
